Managing Dry Scalp For Curly Hair: Tips & Tricks

Dry scalp can be a challenging issue to deal with, especially for those with curly hair. It can cause irritation and discomfort, and may be caused by a variety of factors such as weather, dehydration, dandruff, scalp psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, malnutrition, or stress. Regardless of the cause, we all want to know how to alleviate the dryness, itchiness, and flakiness that come with it.

At Shateria Beauty, our co-founders Terrance and Dandria Williams experienced these same issues during their natural hair journeys. They discovered that combining Apple Cider Vinegar and Aloe Vera was a powerful solution to soothe their scalp issues. Here's a closer look at how they achieved relief.

First they did a deep cleanse.

Your scalp is like the soil of a tree - it requires nurturing, watering, and decontamination to stay healthy. A deep cleanse is essential, and you'll need a clarifying shampoo to do the job right. Unlike regular shampoos, clarifying shampoos remove product build-up, flakes, and restore the pH balance of your scalp. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 0 to 6 being acidic, 7 neutral, and 8 to 14 alkaline. A healthy pH number for your scalp is on the acidic side, between 4.5 and 5.5. Therefore, your clarifying shampoo should have a pH between 5 and 7 to restore your scalp to a healthy state.

Try using products with Apple Cider Vinegar, Aloe Vera extract, peppermint oil or tea tree oil to achieve the desired results. However, it should be noted that there is a specific method to cleaning a flaky and dry scalp. According to the Vegan Natural Hair Gurus, start off by sectioning your hair and treating your scalp and then work your way towards the hair shaft.

Next they put vitamins back into the scalp.

Once you've restored the pH balance of your scalp, it's essential to maintain its health. This includes providing it with the necessary vitamins and nutrients to combat imbalances, inflammation, and bacteria.

One of the best ways to put vitamins back into the scalp is through the use of leave-in conditioners. Leave-in conditioners are a great option for those who want to give their hair a little extra love and attention after shampooing and on the go. The key ingredient you need to use is Aloe Vera. It helps cool and soothe the scalp of inflammation and controls any access oils from building up that shouldn’t be on your scalp. It locks in your healthy natural oils as well.

Another way to put vitamins back into the scalp is through a balanced diet. Eating a diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help to promote healthy hair growth and prevent dryness and irritation. Some of the best foods for promoting healthy hair include leafy greens, nuts, fish, and eggs. These foods are rich in vitamins A, C, D, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for healthy hair growth.

It's also important to stay hydrated in order to maintain a healthy scalp. When the body is dehydrated, the scalp can become dry and itchy. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help to keep the scalp hydrated and healthy.

In addition to a balanced diet, it's important to avoid using harsh chemicals on the hair and scalp. Chemicals such as sulfates and parabens can strip the hair and scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Instead, opt for  natural vegan hair care products, that are free of harsh chemicals.

Overall, managing a dry scalp for curly hair requires a combination of deep cleansing, vitamin restoration, hydration, and gentle hair maintenance care practices. Our co-founders made it easier decided to take their vegan handmade recipes and bottle them for you. And with the right approach, it is possible to alleviate the dryness, itchiness, and flakiness that come with a dry scalp, and promote healthy hair growth.
